Are you new to the web development and web design scene? If so, you may have been asked what your budget is when requesting quotes from web development companies. You can be forgiven for thinking that this is a trick question designed to coerce you out of your hard-earned funds, but believe it or not, there actually are two good reasons why a developer will ask you for your budget.
Firstly, they are doing it to save themselves some time and money in the long run. Some clients have unbelievably high expectations for their websites, but don’t realize the exorbitant costs that such a site would involve. A developer does not want to spend hours working on a proposal for you, with their estimate of what it will cost, only to have you turn it down because you can’t afford it. Not only have you wasted your own time, after reading the proposal, but you have also wasted the time and money of the web development company who will no longer be getting your business.
Secondly, there is a lot more to web development and design today than there was only a few years ago. Instead of just one, there are four major browsers that your developer will need to account for. Each of these browsers will display your website differently, so tweaks and changes need to be made to ensure a consistent appearance all round. The testing and time taken to edit your website will all cost you money, the amount of which is dependent on the kind of website you have.
Don’t be worried every time a web development company asks you for your budget – if you tell them $10,000, they aren’t going to charge you that much and then create a $6,000 website for you. In reality, the developer is trying to accommodate you within price limits that you yourself have set.
